The History of Wine
Samos wine has a rich history, deeply rooted in ancient tradition and Greek mythology. The island is believed to be favored by Dionysus, the Greek god of wine, who gifted the vine to the Samians. The Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains grape, known also as the “Grape of the Gods,” was cultivated here and remains globally renowned. Samos became famous for its wine from antiquity, with its vineyards central to religious and cultural celebrations.
The island’s vineyards, with their unique dry-stone terraces, reflect this ancient heritage. Samos wine was highly esteemed in ancient times, mentioned by Hippocrates and Theophrastus, and was a key export in the Mediterranean trade, carried in distinctive amphorae.
During the Roman and Byzantine eras, Samos wine flourished, enjoying imperial favor and playing a crucial role in religious ceremonies.

Despite challenges during the Ottoman period, Samos wine saw a revival in the 18th century and continued to thrive. The establishment of the Union of Wine Cooperatives of Samos (UWCS) in 1934 further ensured the quality of the wine, which now enjoys Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) status.

Το σαμιώτικο κρασί έχει μια πλούσια ιστορία, βαθιά ριζωμένη στην αρχαία παράδοση και την ελληνική μυθολογία. Πιστεύεται ότι ο Διόνυσος, ο θεός του κρασιού, ευνόησε τη Σάμο και χάρισε την άμπελο στους Σαμίους. Το μοσχάτο σταφύλι, γνωστό ως “Σταφύλι των Θεών”, καλλιεργήθηκε εδώ και παραμένει διάσημο παγκοσμίως. Η Σάμος έγινε διάσημη για το κρασί της από την αρχαιότητα, με τους αμπελώνες της να είναι κεντρικοί σε θρησκευτικές και πολιτιστικές εκδηλώσεις.
Οι αμπελώνες του νησιού, με τις ξεχωριστές πεζούλες από ξερολιθιά, αντικατοπτρίζουν αυτή την αρχαία κληρονομιά. Το σαμιώτικο κρασί εκτιμήθηκε ιδιαίτερα στην αρχαιότητα, αναφερόμενο από τον Ιπποκράτη και τον Θεόφραστο, και ήταν βασικό εξαγωγικό προϊόν στο μεσογειακό εμπόριο, μεταφερόμενο σε χαρακτηριστικούς αμφορείς.
Κατά τη ρωμαϊκή και βυζαντινή εποχή, το σαμιώτικο κρασί άνθισε, απολαμβάνοντας αυτοκρατορική εύνοια και παίζοντας σημαντικό ρόλο στις θρησκευτικές τελετές. Παρά τις δυσκολίες κατά την οθωμανική περίοδο, το σαμιώτικο κρασί γνώρισε αναγέννηση τον 18ο αιώνα και συνέχισε να ακμάζει. Η ίδρυση της Ένωσης Οινοποιητικών Συνεταιρισμών Σάμου (ΕΟΣΣ) το 1934 διασφάλισε την ποιότητα του κρασιού, το οποίο πλέον απολαμβάνει καθεστώς Προστατευόμενης Ονομασίας Προέλευσης (ΠΟΠ).
Στη σύγχρονη εποχή, νέοι οινοπαραγωγοί έχουν αναδειχθεί, συνδυάζοντας την παράδοση με σύγχρονες μεθόδους, παράγοντας εξαιρετικά κρασιά που αναβαθμίζουν το όνομα της Σάμου παγκοσμίως.
